DIY Boutonnieres
With my sister in the midst of planning a wedding of her own - and in need of saving a dollar or two - I looked to creative DIY projects to save some money and add a personal touch to her special day. This first project is simple and fun and can be completed in 6 easy steps.
This project provides the perfect opportunity to get your bridesmaids together for a fun day of creating, and if distance is involved with your beauties, google hangouts is a great platform to stay connected. Alternatively if you're searching for some quiet time alone before the big day, this can be relaxing and very rewarding.
$$ Required: $10-15 for the flowers (or free from your garden).
Everything else was lying about the house, but at the most should cost no more than $30, depending on the type of flowers and accessories you purchase.
What will you need:
- Flowers + greenery of your choice
- An old Key
- String
- Scissors
- Buttons x2
- Needle + Thread
- Pins
Extra items you might like to consider:
- Feathers
- Materials
- Ribbon
- Letters (For the groom and groomsmen’s names)
- Something that reminds you of your groom
- Padlock and Key
Step One
Prep your flowers and greenery removing any unwanted leaf. Make sure the stems are long enough to attach to the groom and groomsmen's suits - about 15cm long or fitting to your key.
Step Two
Get 30cm+ of string and tie the flowers and greenery together as desired, making sure you cover the bottom of the stems.
Step Three
Add the key to your arrangement and secure tightly with the string ensuring there is minimal movement.
Step Four
Two buttons – one big, one small – and sew together with the needle and thread.
Here we’ve chosen orange thread to match our flowers; don’t be afraid to use bold, striking colours throughout your arrangements - the little details make the biggest difference.
Step Five
Attaching the button - Find a suitable position for the buttons and secure with the needle and thread.
We found the button moved around quite significantly on the key, to secure, use the string and wrap around the back of the button and tie at the back of the arrangement.
Step 6
Attach the pin to your arrangement and Voila!
You have your unique boutonniere for your man and his groomsman.
